A cheerful four-year-old girl was tragically killed in a horrific smash on a Birmingham pavement.
Tragic Eid Outing Ends in Horror
Little Mayar Yahia was walking home with her family down Upper Highgate Street on April 14, 2024, after an Eid celebration. Suddenly, a Vauxhall Corsa recklessly overtook a Mercedes and careered onto the pavement, crashing into pedestrians.
Despite frantic efforts from paramedics, Mayar died at the scene. Two women caught in the chaos were left seriously injured.
Driver Caught Out After Lies Unravel
23-year-old Javonnie Tavener vanished from the scene but returned thirty minutes later, when police arrested him.
Tavener tried to shift blame, claiming a second man forced him into the car. But police caught him out when he later searched “driving negligence” and penalties for causing death by careless driving on a phone he insisted wasn’t his.
Heavy Jail Term for Tragic Crash
At Birmingham Crown Court, Tavener pled guilty to causing death and serious injury by careless driving, plus driving uninsured.
He was jailed for three years and ten months for the crash, with an added 18 months for an unrelated assault, totalling five years and four months behind bars. He also received a six-year driving ban.
“Mayar was a cheerful and bright little girl,” police said. “Her loss is deeply felt by the community.”
