Deadly Collision Near Rudston
A man has been locked up for six years after a tragic crash that killed 70-year-old Sue Whittles near Rudston, East Riding of Yorkshire. The horror smash happened on Friday, 24 November 2023, when Timothy Kusemi, 41, recklessly failed to give way at a crossroads.
Guilty Plea and Harsh Sentence
Kusemi, from London’s Lower Bedford Road, pleaded guilty to causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving on 23 February 2026. He had earlier admitted causing death while unlicensed. The court slapped him with six years behind bars and banned him from the roads for 11 years.
Crash Details and Aftermath
Just before 3pm, Kusemi was speeding north on Burton Road in his Audi A6. Sue Whittles was driving east on B1253 Thwing Road in a Volkswagen T-Roc alongside her husband Bill, 83, who was in the passenger seat. At the crossroads with Burton Road and Nine Dikes Road, Kusemi failed to stop and slammed into the side of their car.
Sue died instantly at the scene. Bill suffered horrific injuries, including multiple fractures to his spine, ribs, sternum, wrist, and a dislocated ankle, plus head and facial wounds. Fire crews had to cut him free before he was airlifted to the hospital. Bill endured 12 weeks of intensive treatment and rehab.
Police Investigation and Witness Accounts
Humberside Police’s Serious Collision Unit carried out a thorough investigation. Witnesses described Kusemi’s driving as erratic, weaving dangerously before the crash. It was revealed that his licence wasn’t valid in the UK, and he wasn’t properly qualified to drive at the time.
“This was a tragic and entirely avoidable incident,” said Sgt Rob Mazingham. “Kusemi showed no regard for road signs, causing devastating loss and life-changing injuries.”
Family Tribute
Bill paid a heartfelt tribute to his late wife, Sue: “Sue was my lovely wife and best pal. She was a devoted Nan to Anna and Oliver, who miss her terribly. A respected local preacher, Guide leader, and passionate supporter of Riding for the Disabled – what an awful waste.”
