Hull Funeral Director Admits to 67 Shocking Offences
Robert Bush, a funeral director from Hull, has pleaded guilty to 67 offences including preventing burials and stealing from charities. The revelations come after a lengthy 16-month police investigation exposing horrifying misconduct at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors on Hessle Road.
Horrific Burial Scandal Uncovered
Humberside Police launched their inquiry following concerns about the care of the deceased at the Hull funeral home. Officers discovered 35 bodies stored at the premises – but only four were supposed to be there. Bush admitted to 30 counts of preventing lawful and decent burials for bodies recovered between April 2023 and March 2024.
He also confessed to theft from charities, misappropriating donations meant for good causes over a six-year period.
Fraud and Deception on a Grim Scale
- 30 counts of fraud by false representation: Families were falsely told their loved ones had been cremated and given ashes – which was untrue.
- Four counts related to pregnancies: Families received ashes despite miscarriages, including one unborn child found at the premises.
- One count of fraudulent trading over funeral plans: Bush took payments without passing money to the appropriate financial institutions.
Forensic analysis revealed many boxes of ashes at the funeral home, some labelled with family names – but these ashes did not match the cremations families were told occurred. DNA tests were impossible due to cremation’s extremely high temperatures.
Timeline of Investigation and Legal Action
The investigation escalated after a report on 6 March 2024. Police swiftly removed bodies for formal identification and launched victim support, receiving over 1,500 calls within the first week. Bush was arrested at London Heathrow Airport on 10 March 2024 after returning from America.
A massive evidence file containing over 13,000 items was handed to the Crown Prosecution Service in January 2025. Bush faced the court multiple times, initially pleading guilty to 34 charges and denying 31. Today, 2 April 2026, he admitted to the remaining offences.
He is set for sentencing hearings later this year, with a trial originally planned for October 2026 now unnecessary for the outstanding charges.
This grim case has shaken Hull, leaving families devastated as the extent of Robert Bush’s betrayal comes to light.
