A frantic river search is underway after a man reportedly plunged into the River Tyne following a disturbance near Gateshead’s busy Redheugh Bridge.

Police Called Just Before 10pm

Northumbria Police were alerted to the scene just before 10pm on Friday. Officers quickly responded to reports of the man entering the water amid a chaotic incident.

Woman Arrested, Search Efforts Intensify

A 48-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the event, the police confirmed. The force’s marine unit, along with Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service specialists, has launched extensive searches of both the river and the surrounding area.

Investigation in Early Stages

“While our investigation is very much in its early stages, we’re committed to understanding the full events of yesterday evening,” said Detective Inspector Andy Miller.

“This is an incredibly busy entry route to the city centre and we know there was a lot of activity in the area at the time – including multiple vehicles passing.”

DI Miller urged witnesses and motorists with dashcam footage to come forward to assist the inquiry.
