Meet PC Darren Attwood – a Met Police officer who just can’t switch off, even on his day off.
Just a Normal Saturday… Until It Wasn’t
It was 2 November 2024, a quiet Saturday. Darren was out shopping with his wife, living the dream of a normal day off. Then he spotted two dodgy lads on a moped in a pedestrian zone – flip flops, no helmets, looking suspicious. True to form, Darren told his wife, “I’m just going to go and have a look.” Two words every police partner dreads.
Machete Mayhem in Broad Daylight
Darren calmly approached the pair and said, “What are you doing, lads? Whatever you’re doing, just stop it. It’s not worth it.” Most would expect an apology and a quick exit. Not here. One thug whispered, “Just kill him, fam,” while the other whipped out a machete.
“It was at that point I thought: it’s a bit too late to run away. I’m in too deep now. I need to do something,” Darren recalled.
With no backup, no radio, and just his denim shirt, Darren took a battering. They slashed his arm and waist. He grabbed a hefty plastic barrier and held it like a shield. Still, one thug stabbed him in the chest before they fled. Bleeding, Darren called 999. “They were there in two minutes. It was lovely to hear sirens coming from everywhere,” he said, in true copper style.
Justice Served and Hero Honoured
- Hannan and Humar Mahmood, the brothers behind the attack, were swiftly caught and jailed for seven years each at Luton Crown Court.
- Darren received a public commendation from the Commissioner and a High Sheriff’s Award.
- The Met churned out a five-and-a-half-minute video titled “We’re never off duty” starring Darren’s bravery.
- In 2026, Darren bagged the prestigious London Police Bravery Award. Police Mutual hailed him “a true hero.”
So, Darren Attwood went out for a simple Saturday shop and came home with stab wounds, justice served, prestigious awards – and no doubt a long chat with his missus about what a “day off” really means.
