Jay Jenkins-Lang, 23, has been locked up for a decade after raping a 17-year-old girl he had been messaging online. The vile attacker was also given a six-year extended licence period, ensuring he’ll be monitored long after release.
Attack After Escaping Court
On June 28, 2023, Jenkins-Lang, then 20, absconded from Newport Magistrate’s Court. He then turned up at the victim’s home and forced his way into her bedroom. Despite her clear refusal, he sexually assaulted her. The brave victim managed to escape and alerted a neighbour, prompting police intervention.
Armed and Dangerous at Arrest
When officers arrested Jenkins-Lang, he was clad in a stab vest and armed with a BB gun and a knife. His threat to public safety didn’t end there.
Failed Attempt to Pervert Justice
During his September 2024 trial, Jenkins-Lang shocked court by handing his barrister a letter claiming the victim cleared him of the crime. Forensic experts proved the letter was a fake, leading to charges of perverting the course of justice. A 21-year-old man linked to the letter was cleared.
Sentence and Police Statement
Jenkins-Lang was convicted of rape, possession of a firearm, actual bodily harm, and perverting the course of justice at Cardiff Crown Court on February 25. He faces 10 years behind bars plus six years on extended licence.
“Jay Jenkins-Lang is a dangerous individual who carried out hideous offences against a teenage girl,” said Police Staff Investigator Victoria Hopkins. “He cowardly tried to derail the trial but justice prevailed. The victim’s strength and courage made this possible. We hope this verdict brings her some closure.”
Gwent Police urge anyone affected by sexual assault to come forward, reassuring them of full support from police and partner agencies.
