A brand-new bus service is set to shake up Sussex travel next year. Launching on 9 May 2026, Route 500 will offer a direct, round-the-clock bus link from Eastbourne to Gatwick Airport, stopping at key towns along the way.
Direct Route Through Sussex Towns
Route 500 will run 24/7, with buses every hour, connecting Eastbourne with Gatwick via Willingdon, Hailsham, East Hoathly, Halland, Uckfield, Maresfield, Forest Row, East Grinstead, Copthorne, and the Manor Royal Business District. The new service replaces routes 54 (Eastbourne–Uckfield) and 261 (Uckfield–East Grinstead), delivering a quicker, more straightforward connection — especially between East Grinstead and Gatwick Airport.

Nick Hill of Metrobus calls the route a “major step forward” for Sussex connectivity. He said it provides a reliable, affordable option for workers, residents, and travellers alike, giving better access to jobs, education, and the airport.
“This is a huge boost for Sussex, delivering a bus service passengers can rely on anytime,” said Nick Hill, Metrobus Commercial Director.
Gatwick Backs New 24/7 Service
Jonathan Pollard from London Gatwick welcomed the scheme as the airport’s eighth 24-hour bus connection. He said it’s a win for sustainable travel and strengthens links across East and West Sussex.
“We are delighted to partner on this. It makes life easier for airport staff and passengers travelling across the region,” said Jonathan Pollard, Gatwick’s Chief Commercial Officer.
