Metropolitan Police officers launched a specialist operation targeting phone thieves across tourist hotspots in South London on the night of Friday 24 April. The crackdown focused on key locations including Southbank, Borough Market and Waterloo, where offenders commonly operate using illegal e-bikes. The swift action led to six arrests linked to organised robbery and phone snatching on Borough High Street, Southwark.
Distraction Tactics Uncovered
Officers identified a group using a cunning distraction method: approaching pedestrians and asking them to unlock their phones to follow social media accounts. While the victims were distracted, their devices were stolen. The suspects were quickly intercepted and arrested for conspiracy to rob.
E-bikes Aid Rapid Offences
The thieves frequently use illegally modified electric bikes to snatch phones and escape quickly. The Met deployed plain-clothes officers alongside specialist pursuit drivers and motorbikes to disrupt these high-speed thefts effectively.
Significant Crime Reduction
The operation is part of a wider effort by the Met to reduce phone theft, cutting offences by 13,000 in the last financial year. In Southwark and Lambeth alone, e-bike-related crimes linked to theft dropped by nearly 40% within a week.
Advanced Policing Techniques
New tools, including drones, high-powered e-bikes and live facial recognition support targeted patrols and intelligence-led operations. Since January 2025, over 3,000 illegal e-bikes and scooters have been seized to combat organised crime networks.
Calls For Industry Action
Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley urges phone manufacturers and tech companies to implement stronger anti-theft features by 1 June, to make stolen phones unusable. Failure to comply may prompt government legislation aimed at reducing phone theft.
