Jordan Linden, ex-leader of North Lanarkshire Council and former SNP member, has been sentenced to 18 months in jail after being found guilty of multiple sexual offences against boys and young men. The offences, which took place between 2011 and 2021 across North Lanarkshire and other locations, including Dundee, led to his resignation in July 2022 and the collapse of the SNP administration locally.
Historic Offences Revealed
The 30-year-old Linden was convicted at Falkirk Sheriff Court of ten offences, including five sexual assaults and charges related to sexual communication and causing fear or alarm. Victims ranged in age, with the youngest being 14 years old. One notable incident involved Linden sexually assaulting two victims at a Dundee house party following a Pride march in 2019.
Legal Outcome And Sentencing
Sentencing Linden, Sheriff Christopher Shead concluded that jail was the only appropriate punishment, despite submissions from Linden’s lawyer, David Moggach KC, seeking alternatives. Linden has no previous convictions and was diagnosed with autism in 2021. However, the nature and seriousness of the offences determined the custodial sentence. Linden has been placed on the sex offenders’ register for ten years.
Defence And Diagnosis
Linden’s legal team highlighted his autism diagnosis and lack of offending since 2021, as well as the fact that some offences occurred when he was still a teenager. Mr Moggach told the court that the diagnosis helped explain Linden’s poor awareness of social boundaries, stressing Linden’s remorse and understanding of the wrongdoing committed.
Police Statement And Investigation
Detective Chief Inspector Diane Barr, lead investigator, said: “This was a protracted investigation involving many witnesses who regarded Linden as a figure of trust. He abused that position to exploit young males seeking support and mentorship. Their bravery in coming forward ensured justice.” She added, “No one should suffer sexual offending and we always investigate all reports regardless of timing or the perpetrator’s status.”
