An Amazon delivery driver has avoided immediate prison after being caught on a Ring doorbell camera stealing a family’s cat in Elland, West Yorkshire. Catalin Stancu, 41, was filmed snatching three-year-old Nora, a rescue tabby, from a front garden on 18 January 2026. The footage helped police trace Stancu to his home in Oldham, and the cat was safely returned three days later.
Cat Theft Caught On Camera
Stancu was recorded staring at Nora for several moments before picking her up and putting her into his car. The family used the footage and his vehicle registration to launch a social media appeal, which aided the police investigation.
Drivers Conflicting Defence
At Bradford Magistrates’ Court, Stancu pleaded guilty under the Pet Abduction Act 2024 but attempted to argue he had no bad intentions. He claimed, “I didn’t steal it, I just took it,” insisting he thought the cat was a stray despite it wearing a collar. This contradicted his initial police statements, where he admitted noticing the collar but chose to take the cat home to care for it.
Suspended Sentence Imposed
Stancu was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to complete 15 days of community service. Additionally, he must pay £500 compensation to the cat’s owners. The most important outcome is that Nora remains unharmed and has been reunited with her family.
Community Reaction
The case highlights rising concerns over pet theft and the role of smart technology in catching culprits. The family’s quick action and the Ring camera footage proved vital in securing justice.
