Angela Rayner, former Deputy Prime Minister and Ashton-under-Lyne MP, has received a £61,500 advance for her upcoming memoir from publisher Bodley Head. The candid book is set to reveal her journey from a tough upbringing to senior Cabinet minister, with publication expected later this year amid possible Labour leadership speculation.
Raw Life Story
Rayner’s memoir promises an unvarnished account of her life, covering her impoverished childhood, leaving school at 16 while pregnant, and her rise to political prominence. A ghostwriter is assisting to capture her plain-speaking style, with Rayner narrating the audiobook herself.
Leadership Speculation
The memoir’s timing could coincide with a Labour leadership contest, following uncertainties after the Makerfield by-election on 18 June. Rayner has indicated a willingness to challenge for party leadership, especially after clearing a tax settlement that previously forced her to resign as Deputy Prime Minister.
Tax Controversy Resolved
Last September, Rayner stepped down after admitting to an unpaid £40,000 stamp duty bill on her Hove flat purchase. The advance she received from Bodley Head covers more than this amount, easing her financial burden.
Publishing Buzz
The advance came after a competitive bidding war among publishers keen to release what a friend describes as “authentically Angela” rather than a typical politician’s memoir. Bodley Head editorial director Alice Skinner praised the book’s honest voice and empowering message.
