BMW M Motorsport Roars Back at Le Mans with Stunning Podium after 25 Years

Triumph Amid Torrential Rain

After a quarter-century away, BMW M Motorsport made a sensational return to the top class at the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans. Battling brutal weather and multiple crashes, the Team WRT #31 BMW M4 GT3, driven by Augusto Farfus, Sean Gelael, and Darren Leung, clinched an impressive second place in the LMGT3 category.

The race threw down relentless rain showers, triggering a lengthy safety car period. But the #31 crew kept their cool and raced flawlessly, delivering BMW’s first Le Mans podium since 2011 – a huge milestone.

Hypercar Heartbreak

The Hypercar class was a nightmare for BMW M Motorsport. Both the #15 BMW M Hybrid V8 and the flashy #20 BMW M Hybrid V8 Art Car were forced out by crashes. The #15, despite Dries Vanthoor smashing the fastest qualifying time, was taken out after a terrifying high-speed collision caused by another car.

The #20 Art Car, which had made strong progress, suffered a brutal accident that required major repairs. In a heroic display, the team managed to limp it across the finish line, symbolising sheer determination.

Team Spirit Shines Through

Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH, called the weekend emotional but unifying for the BMW M family. He hailed the #20 Art Car’s return to the track as a powerful symbol of resilience and team spirit.

Andreas Roos, Head of BMW M Motorsport, described the race as an emotional rollercoaster. Yet, he took pride in the team’s strong opening and praised the #31’s podium finish as a fitting close to a dramatic event.

Fans Get a Taste of BMW’s Best

Beyond the racing drama, BMW M Motorsport wowed fans with exclusive showcases, debuting the new BMW M5 in a Closed Room experience along with updates to the BMW M2 and BMW M4 CS models, proving the brand’s fire burns strong both on and off the track.
