Knife-point robbery sparks police chase
Just before 7pm on Tuesday, 2 January, cops rushed to reports of a knife-point robbery near St James Road. They spoke to the male victim before launching a search for the attacker.
The suspect was spotted but fled on foot. Officers gave chase and finally caught him outside a High Street pub.
Officer stabbed during arrest
In the struggle, a police constable suffered a stab wound to his leg. He was rushed to a south London hospital by ambulance and is now in stable condition. Thankfully, his injuries are not life-threatening.
The injured officer’s attacker was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and robbery. He is currently held at a south-west London police station.
Victim also hospitalised with minor injuries
The robbery victim was also taken to hospital but was not stabbed.
Chief Superintendent Robyn Williams, Sutton’s Borough commander, said: “Thankfully, incidents of this nature are rare. However, they highlight the risks officers face daily. It is totally unacceptable for an officer to be assaulted like this. We are lucky his injuries were not worse. Our thoughts are with him, his family and colleagues.”
