Fugitive Arrested in Suriname Over Manchester Murder Probe
John Belfield Nabbed Abroad
John Belfield, 28, was arrested on Thursday 23 March 2023 by Suriname authorities. He is suspected of drug-related offences, but more importantly, he has been wanted by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) in connection with a murder investigation.
Murder of Thomas Campbell
Belfield has been linked to the death of Thomas Campbell, 38, who was found fatally assaulted at his home in Mossley, Tameside. Mr Campbell’s body was discovered by a neighbour on Saturday 3 July 2022 after suffering injuries the night before.
Global Manhunt Ends
GMP launched a public appeal in August 2022 to track down Belfield. Officers worked relentlessly, coordinating with international law enforcement to catch the suspect abroad.
Detective Chief Inspector Liz Hopkinson said: “The news of Belfield’s arrest is an important development in our investigation. We will be working with international law enforcement agencies to bring Belfield back to Manchester and continue to find answers for Thomas’ family.”
“Thanks to the vigilance of our South American colleagues, Belfield was recognised and arrested in Suriname. Information was swiftly shared with our Force Critical Wanted Unit.”
“We thank the public for their ongoing support. This excellent result proves UK law enforcement never gives up on bringing fugitives home.”
