Woking Flood Defence Boost: 16 Million Litres of Rainwater Storage at Horsell Common
Homes in Horsell, Canalside, Mount Herman and Pyrford wards have battled severe flooding for six years. Now, a major flood defence project is underway at Horsell Common.
Massive New Pools to Soak Up Excess Water
Three newly built pools will hold a whopping 16 million litres of rainwater, easing pressure during heavy downpours. Existing drainage ditches are also being upgraded to improve water flow and reduce flood risk.
Wildlife-Friendly Upgrades and New Walkways
Underground chambers are being installed to protect local amphibians and reptiles from the cold. Plus, new footpaths and boardwalks will ensure visitors can enjoy Horsell Common all year. Once the work wraps, fresh trees and wildflowers will be planted to boost the natural beauty.
Council’s Pledge: Tackling Flooding and Enhancing Recreation
Kevin Deanus, Cabinet Member for Highways and Community Resilience, said: “I’m delighted to see these works underway at Horsell Common. Flooding is a terrible experience, and we want to do all we can to alleviate this for our residents.
“This is one of many schemes we are working on to reduce the impact of flooding in and around Woking and across Surrey. It will also bring recreational improvements to Horsell Common, which is a popular spot for walkers and wildlife alike.
“Other measures include installing rain gardens to store stormwater in central Woking and working with landowners to keep ditches free-flowing.”
This multi-pronged approach aims to shield Woking from flooding while improving local green spaces for residents and wildlife alike.
