At 12.09am on Monday, 27 April, Met police raced to a blaze raging in a residential property on Manor Avenue, SE4. A man, reportedly in the grip of a mental health crisis, had started a fire inside one of the rooms.

Explosion Sparks Panic

The drama escalated when an aerosol the man was using exploded, causing injuries and fueling the fire. Emergency services arrived swiftly.

Officer Bravery Saves the Day

Police officers led the injured man to safety amid thick smoke. One officer suffered smoke inhalation and was treated by London Ambulance Service before being taken to hospital as a precaution.

Man Hospitalised and Detained

The man’s injuries were serious but not life-threatening. He was admitted to hospital and has since been detained under the Mental Health Act for treatment.
