UK Launches New Emergency Alerts System to Save Lives
The UK is rolling out a cutting-edge Emergency Alerts system designed to blast urgent warnings to nearly 90% of mobile phones in affected areas. This mobile broadcast technology promises to deliver clear, actionable instructions fast, helping people stay safe during crises.
Nationwide Test Set for 23 April
Following successful trials in East Suffolk and Reading, the Government is ready for a UK-wide test. On Sunday 23 April in the early evening, millions will receive a test alert on their mobiles. These messages will only come from official sources like the Government or emergency services, detailing the impacted area and next steps. For more info, visit gov.uk/alerts.
Rare but Life-Saving Alerts for Serious Threats
The alerts will be used sparingly—only when lives are at immediate risk. People may go months or years without receiving one. The system has already proved its worth overseas in the US, Canada, the Netherlands, and Japan, helping to save lives during extreme weather incidents. In the UK, potential alerts include wildfires, severe flooding, and other urgent threats.
Officials Back New System to Boost National Safety
Oliver Dowden MP, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said: “We are strengthening our national resilience with a new emergency alerts system to tackle all kinds of threats—from flooding to wildfires. This will revolutionise our ability to warn people in danger, because as we’ve seen in the US and elsewhere, the buzz of a phone can save a life.”
Mark Hardingham, Chair of the National Fire Chiefs Council, added: “Alongside every fire and rescue service, I’m eager to use Emergency Alerts to better protect communities. We’ve seen the system work worldwide, and now it’s here in the UK. Together with our partners, this will help keep people safe when disaster strikes.”
Caroline Douglass, Executive Director at the Environment Agency, said: “Timely, accurate communication is critical in emergencies. This year marks 70 years since the deadly 1953 east coast flood, which claimed over 300 lives. Our warning tools have come a long way since then, and Emergency Alerts is a vital addition that will help protect families and neighbours.”
How It Works
The system blasts alerts via nearby cell towers, making messages secure, free, and one-way. It never tracks your location or collects personal data. Only authorised Government and emergency service teams can send alerts. Live tests have already proved successful in East Suffolk and Reading, paving the way for full UK deployment.
