Father Stabbed in Shocking Nelson Blaze
Police rushed to a terrifying scene in Nelson, near Caerphilly, in the early hours of 16 November 2022 after reports a 32-year-old man had stabbed his father.
Officers Battle Flames and Smoke to Save Lives
On arrival, Gwent and South Wales Police from the joint firearms unit provided first aid to the stabbing victim. Meanwhile, PC Ashley Joseph and PS Luke Francis headed to the suspect’s nearby address but were met with smoke pouring from an upstairs window and discovered a mattress set on fire.
Without hesitation, officers launched an emergency search, crawling through dense smoke and battling rising flames to find anyone trapped inside. Joined by a police sergeant, they fought the blaze with extinguishers but had to retreat due to dangerous conditions after eight tense minutes.
Neighbours and Pets Rescued Amid Fire
The flat was attached to three other homes, so a second search was swiftly conducted. Officers safely evacuated two people and a dog from an adjacent property, preventing the fire from spreading further.
Suspect Surrenders as Officers Risk All
After an hour at the scene, all five officers re-entered the property with fire service-supplied respirators for a third search. A negotiator then located the suspect nearby, who soon surrendered without further incident.
Phil Walker, Vice-chair of South Wales Police Federation, said: “Every day, police put their lives on the line to protect the public. This was a prime example of bravery and courage. These officers risked everything to save others and deserve recognition for their heroic actions.”
Gwent Police Deputy Chief Constable Mark Hobrough added: “Their quick actions prevented a tragic escalation. They showed outstanding problem-solving under pressure and courage in the face of extreme danger.”
Superintendent Sarah Greening, acting head of the Joint Firearms Unit, praised: “The officers demonstrated extreme bravery and tactical brilliance while risking their own safety. Their outstanding situational awareness saved lives and safeguarded the community.”
Gwent Police Federation Chair Matthew Candy said: “Our members acted swiftly and decisively to protect lives in this highly dangerous situation. Their nomination for bravery is well deserved.”
