Chaos in Trafalgar Square as protest ends with 32 arrests

Protesters Clash with Police in Central London

On Saturday, 19 September, a large protest erupted in London’s iconic Trafalgar Square. Police were on scene all day, using the four Es approach – explain, engage, encourage, and enforce – to persuade protesters to disperse.

Despite repeated warnings, the crowd refused to leave, risking public safety amid the ongoing Covid-19 crisis.

Violence Erupts, Police Take Action

Hostility quickly escalated with outbreaks of violence against officers. In response, police command decided to clear the area. The operation resulted in 32 arrests for offences including violent disorder, public order offences, assault on emergency workers, and breaches of Covid regulations.

Two officers suffered minor injuries during the chaos. The square was finally cleared shortly after 6pm, restoring order to the area.

Police Warning and Public Health Message

Superintendent Emma Richards, Gold Commander, said: “We remain in the middle of a public health crisis. Gathering in large groups like this protest puts people at risk. We advised those in attendance to leave, but many refused. The hostility shown to our officers is unacceptable. Over 30 people were arrested and remain in custody. Trafalgar Square is now clear so Londoners can enjoy their Saturday safely while following government guidance.”

Stay Safe, Follow the Rules

Most Londoners are sticking to the rules, but the message remains clear: stay vigilant. Keep social distancing, respect new regulations, and help protect yourself and your loved ones.

Exceptions to restrictions are limited to gatherings organised by businesses or registered charities with risk assessments in place, essential work-related meetups, sports, protests, or emergency assistance.
