Warning for Brits: New Tourist Tax Hits Algarve Holidays
British holidaymakers heading to Portugal’s Algarve are facing a fresh blow. A new “tourist tax” could add up to £50 to your family getaway, sparking concerns for those planning sun-soaked breaks.
How Much Will You Pay?
From March to September, visitors to Portimão on the Algarve coast must cough up €2 (£1.70) per night, capped at a week. For a family of four, that’s a pricey extra chunk added to your beach holiday tab.
Between October and February, the fee drops to €1 (85p) per night. Kids under 13? They’re off the hook.
Mayor Promises Fair Play and Boosted Tourism
Portimão’s Mayor, Isilda Gomes, said the tax will raise “a few million euros” to improve tourist facilities. “These funds are crucial for the city’s development,” she insisted.
Algarve Still a British Favourite Despite the Fee
The Algarve remains a superstar destination. Fresh from winning “Europe’s Leading Beach Destination” for the 10th time at the 2023 World Travel Awards, the area boasts over 100 beaches—88 of which have Blue Flag status.
Love Holidays reveals winter sun breaks start from just £94 per person for a week. Plus, flights from the UK to Faro take just two hours and can cost as little as £14.99!
Tourism chief André Gomes said the beaches cater to every taste — from long sandy stretches to hidden coves and surf hotspots.
Tourism Tax: A Necessary Nuisance?
The new levy highlights the struggle popular hotspots face in managing booming visitor numbers and funding sustainable tourism projects. For now, it’s another cost holidaymakers need to budget for when booking a sunny escape to the Algarve.
