Paraglider Crash Sparks Major Rescue on Isle of Wight
A paraglider pilot is in hospital this afternoon after a dramatic crash landing near Compton Farm on the West Wight.
Emergency Services Rush to West Wight Rescue
The accident happened shortly before midday on the Military Road, prompting a swift response from two coastguard search and rescue teams, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, and a coastguard rescue helicopter based at Lee-on-the-Solent.
Paramedics were first alerted at 11:20am after reports of a paraglider falling from the sky. They arrived on the scene 25 minutes later and immediately called in the air ambulance for backup. However, thick fog over West Wight complicated rescue efforts and forced the helicopter crew to turn back.
Challenging Weather Forces Ground Evacuation
Coastguard teams from Ventnor and the Needles were also deployed to assist in the search for the downed pilot. Despite the poor visibility, Island paramedics treated the man at the crash site before transferring him to St Mary’s Hospital.
The coastguard rescue helicopter 175 attempted to airlift the casualty but couldn’t proceed due to adverse weather conditions and returned to base.
Man Transported to Hospital by Land Ambulance
With an aerial rescue ruled out, the injured pilot was carefully loaded into a 4×4 vehicle and driven to the hospital by land ambulance.
Officials confirmed the man is currently recovering at St Mary’s Hospital following the crash.
