Leeds Chaos: Home Secretary Slams “Audacious Criminality” in Harehills Riots
Violence erupted in Leeds’ Harehills on Thursday, sparking outrage from the Home Secretary who labelled the chaos “audacious criminality”. Five suspects have been arrested following the mayhem that saw a bus torched and a police car flipped over.
Violence Explodes After Child Protection Incident
West Yorkshire Police were initially called to the scene over a child protection issue. Tensions soared when officers faced hostility helping social workers. The situation quickly spiralled into disorder, with mobs setting fires and attacking police vehicles.
“The scenes of criminality were shocking,” said Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. “Those responsible should face the full force of the law.”
Police Crackdown Underway
West Yorkshire’s Assistant Chief Constable Pat Twiggs promised a relentless investigation. “We’re working at significant pace to find those involved,” he said. A heavy police presence will patrol Harehills in the coming days, with the public urged to come forward with information.
“If you played a part in last night’s disorder, now is the time to hand yourself in,” Twiggs warned. He also called on parents of young offenders to cooperate with police.
Community Leaders Call for Calm
Leeds City Council, alongside Romanian and Roma community groups, announced an urgent review into the child protection case that triggered the unrest. In a joint statement, they appealed for calm to prevent further upheaval.
“Local people are devastated by these events,” the council said. “We aim to ensure there are no repeats of these distressing scenes which harm our community deeply.”
