Tragic Hit-and-Run Kills Cyclist in East London
A cyclist has died after being hit by a car in a heartbreaking hit-and-run in East London overnight. The crash happened near the junction of Cable Street and Cannon Street Road, close to Shadwell.
Suspects Arrested After Fleeing the Scene
The car involved sped off after the collision, but police quickly arrested two women. Both face charges of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene. They are currently in police custody.
Emergency Crews Tried to Save Cyclist
Emergency services, including London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance, rushed to the scene at 00:33 on Saturday, 6 July. Despite their best efforts, the cyclist – believed to be a man in his 30s – was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Officers were called at 00:33hrs on Saturday, 6 July to reports of a collision involving a car and a cyclist near to the junction of Cable Street and Cannon Street Road, E1,” a police spokesperson said. “Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, the cyclist sadly died at the scene. Officers are in the process of informing his next of kin.”
Road Closures and Ongoing Investigation
Several roads around the crash site remain closed while detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) probe the incident. Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
