Climate Chaos at Gatwick: Just Stop Oil Storms Southern Terminal

Early this morning, Gatwick Airport’s southern terminal was thrown into turmoil as environmental activists from Just Stop Oil launched a disruptive protest. Starting at 8am, seven campaigners locked themselves to suitcases right at the departure gates, blocking hundreds of travellers from boarding their flights.

Protesters Lock On, Passengers Left Stranded

Images released by Just Stop Oil show activists sitting defiantly on the floor, obstructing key access points inside the terminal. Travellers were forced to weave around the protesters as airport staff scrambled to regain control.

The group declared their direct action is aimed at halting new UK oil and gas projects, accusing the government of a “reckless pursuit” of fossil fuels that threatens the planet’s future.

“Our supporters are here today to demand an end to the government’s reckless pursuit of fossil fuel extraction,” Just Stop Oil said.

Airport and Police Respond Swiftly

Gatwick officials acted fast, deploying extra security to the southern terminal. A spokesperson said: “We are working with local authorities to resolve the situation as quickly and safely as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank passengers for their patience.”

Sussex Police confirmed multiple arrests for public nuisance, with officers on site managing the escalating situation.

Ongoing Climate Campaigns Spark Travel Warnings

This protest is just the latest in a string of disruptive demonstrations by Just Stop Oil targeting airports and major infrastructure. Their actions have triggered warnings for travellers to expect delays and check flight statuses before heading to Gatwick today.

The group’s aggressive tactics continue to fuel fierce debate over climate activism versus public disruption, highlighting the growing clash between green campaigners and government energy policies.

Passengers are urged to plan ahead as Gatwick and airlines work overtime to minimise travel chaos.
