First Migrant Boats of 2026 Brave Freezing Channel
The new year’s first batch of small boat migrants have touched down on UK shores – battling brutal sub-zero chills to reach Dover. The UK Border Force catamaran Hurricane arrived just before 4pm today carrying scores of migrants rescued mid-Channel after a risky journey from northern France.
Officials say there were several dozen aboard, though the Home Office is keeping exact numbers under wraps for now. This is the first landing since December 22, signaling the grim return of the Channel crossings despite the bone-chilling weather.
Migrant Record-Breaking Surge Meets Arctic Conditions
Last year smashed records with 41,472 small boat arrivals – a sharp 13% rise on 2024’s 36,816 and a massive 41% leap from 2023’s 29,437. Only 2022 saw higher numbers, at 45,755.
Meanwhile, the Met Office issued warnings of sleet, icy winds, and temperatures feeling like minus 3°C in Dover, intensifying the peril for Channel crossers.
French authorities have already turned back two groups totaling around 30 migrants, some suffering severe hypothermia near Boulogne.
New Tough Measures Target Migrant Smugglers
A fresh crackdown kicked off this January with new powers allowing officers at Manston processing centre to seize phones and SIM cards from migrants without requiring an arrest. Border Force can now even search mouths for hidden SIMs and use tech to download data on the spot.
The Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act, passed in December, aims to throttle people smuggling gangs and speed up migrant processing.
“This is a key moment in our fight against Channel crossings,” hailed UK Border Security Commander Martin Hewitt.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp slammed the move as a “limited fix” that might help “at the margins” but won’t solve the small boats crisis.
