EastEnders Star Cheryl Fergison Reveals Shocking Food Bank Struggle

Cheryl Fergison, famous for her role as Heather Trott on EastEnders, has opened up about hitting rock bottom earlier this year. The 60-year-old actress faced such severe financial hardship, she was forced to rely on a food bank – a heartbreaking fall from her soap star days.

From Cancer Battle to Mental Health Crisis

Fergison’s troubles began after her 2015 womb cancer diagnosis. She underwent a hysterectomy that triggered early menopause and severe mental health struggles. She revealed terrifying self-harm, scalding herself with boiling water multiple times daily in a desperate attempt to “wash away cancer cells”.

“I was damaging myself so badly. As soon as I got the all-clear, I stopped. Being told you’re ill isn’t just physical – it messes with your head too,” she told The Mirror.

‘Penniless’ and Tearful at Citizens Advice

By February 2024, Cheryl admitted she was “penniless” and couldn’t even afford basic food. A visit to Citizens Advice broke her down in tears. She recalled,

“I sat there and cried. How could I have been on EastEnders earning good money, and now I’m here? It was one of the hardest moments of my life.”

The advice centre sent her to a food bank, where she received essentials, including groceries, dog food, and a bunch of daffodils. “It felt like the biggest, warmest hug. They were like angels,” she said.

Looking Ahead: Fairytale Role and Fresh Hope

Now in a better place, Fergison is determined to never return to food banks. This Christmas she’ll star as Fairy Godmother in Cinderella in Peterborough, acting alongside her son Alex, 25, who plays Buttons.

Cheryl also hopes for a TV comeback. “I’d love another soap role. And I’m up for I’m A Celebrity. Bring it on!”

Cheryl’s Message: No Shame in Asking for Help

Fergison wants her story to inspire others struggling financially. “Food banks are there for you – don’t feel embarrassed or that it’s a weakness. Everyone deserves to live with dignity.”

Her candid confession highlights the harsh reality that fame doesn’t guarantee financial security in the entertainment world. Cheryl’s courage shines a light on the vital importance of seeking help and breaking the stigma around food banks.
