Police Pensions Get a Boost After SCAPE Rate Shake-Up

The Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) has welcomed the Government’s latest move to update the Police Pension Scheme 1987. This comes after a consultation on the Superannuation Contributions Adjusted for Past Experience (SCAPE) discount rate, which now means better pension payouts for officers at retirement.

What’s Changing?

The updated commutation factors mean police officers will get more cash when converting their pension into a lump sum at retirement. These new rates kicked in from 31 March 2023. However, PFEW has criticised the Government for not giving advance notice to officers or pension administrators, leaving many in the dark.

Who Benefits?

The changes don’t apply retrospectively. But officers retiring soon, or those who have retired on or after 31 March 2023, are urged to contact their pension administrator to check how this affects them. The update could mean a fat boost to their retirement pots.
