Step-Son Jailed After Fatally Stabbing Stepfather in Hayes
Mental Health Struggles Lead to Manslaughter Sentence
Adejuwon Olufemi Alexander Jnr Oyekan, 32, has been sentenced for the manslaughter of his stepfather following a brutal stabbing in Hayes, West London. The Old Bailey heard the attack happened while Oyekan was battling severe mental health issues.
On Thursday, 10 April, Oyekan was handed a hospital order under the Mental Health Act. He will remain locked up in a secure psychiatric unit until deemed safe for release.
Deadly Incident in Early Hours
The tragic stabbing took place in the early hours of Tuesday, 11 July 2023. Police rushed to a Hayes home after reports of a stabbing. They found Oyekan still gripping the knife used to attack his 54-year-old stepfather, Jason Thompson.
Officers tried using tasers to disarm Oyekan, but failed. They had to fall back and wait for armed backup. Once in custody, police and paramedics tried to save Jason, but he sadly died at the scene.
Family Mourns Loving Brother
Jason’s sister, Barbara Thompson, paid a heartfelt tribute:
“Jason and I had a special bond. We were both cheerleaders for one another… There is not a day that goes past without tears and my heart aching. I still struggle with the reality that he’s not here… Jason leaves behind a beautiful, attentive and caring legacy.”
Police Praise Courage of Officers at Scene
Detective Chief Inspector Laura Semple, from the Met’s Public Protection Partnership, expressed condolences and applauded the first responders:
“The first responding officers demonstrated huge bravery to challenge Oyekan, who was armed and acting aggressively. Their quick thinking ensured he was safely taken into custody and did not pose a wider threat to the public.”
From Murder Charge to Manslaughter by Diminished Responsibility
Oyekan initially faced a murder charge but pleaded guilty to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility on 24 February 2025. Legal experts accepted his mental health condition played a significant role in the crime.
He remains in a secure hospital under strict medical supervision. Release will only come when mental health professionals and the courts consider it safe.
