Bank Station was plunged into chaos yesterday afternoon after smoke billowed from a Northern Line train. Transport for London (TfL) confirmed the station shut around 5pm on October 8 following the alarming incident.
Passengers Evacuated Amid Smoke and ‘Burning Stink’
Witnesses took to social media to describe the tense scene. One user tweeted: “Bank Station evacuated. Lots of smoke and burning stink on southbound Northern line train on the platform.” Emergency services rushed to the scene, heightening fears of a serious fire.
TfL Clarifies: Faulty Train to Blame, No Injuries Reported
A TfL spokesperson revealed the smoke came from a faulty carriage on the Northern Line. “There was an issue causing smoke to come from one of the carriages, so we cleared the station and are checking it out,” they said. The London Fire Brigade was called as a precaution – standard procedure whenever smoke is detected underground.
Thankfully, no injuries have been reported. Bank Station has since reopened after emergency crews gave the all-clear.
Authorities Continue Investigations
British Transport Police, London Fire Brigade, and London Ambulance Service are reviewing the incident. Further details are expected as officials piece together what caused the smoke and ensured passenger safety.
