Tragic Loss of 8-Year-Old Jay Cartmell Sparks Heartfelt Family Tribute

The parents of Jay Cartmell, the 8-year-old boy fatally shot near Warcop, have paid a touching tribute to their beloved son. Leigha and James Cartmell described Jay as “loving, kind and full of mischief” in an emotional statement.

“We are heartbroken at the passing of our perfect little boy,” the devastated parents said. “He was the best boy that anyone could wish for and the third corner of our beautiful family ‘triangle’.”

Jay’s Passions: Speedway, Football and Nature

Jay’s love for the outdoors and speedway racing was well known. He followed his father to races at Workington since he was just one. Showing real talent, Jay was quickly becoming a promising young rider in the sport.

But speedway wasn’t all. Jay was an avid football fan and played as a defender for Whitehaven Miners Football Club. His parents fondly recall his boundless enthusiasm, even after those inevitable own goals. Jay dreamt of meeting football legend Lionel Messi and hoped one day to move to Brazil.

His love of nature shone through in his fishing trips and rabbiting adventures with his dad. Jay also cared for the family’s pets, including four lurchers, five ferrets, plus his own bearded dragon, Spike.

Beloved by All and Excelling in School

Jay was not just sporty—he also loved school and excelled in maths. His parents said he was “deeply loved by all who knew him” and “always had a smile on his face.”

Thanks to Medical Teams and Community Support

The Cartmells expressed heartfelt appreciation for the Air Ambulance Service, PICU, Ward 12 RVI, and the Snowdrop Suite at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for their care. They also thanked the Workington Speedway Supporters Club, JD Autos, Fellview Surgery, Workington Comets, and Whitehaven Miners for their overwhelming support and tributes to Jay’s memory.
