Booking.com Users Targeted in £370,000 Hotel Scam – Action Fraud Issues Warning
Scam Alert: Fake Hotel Payment Requests Hit Thousands
Booking.com customers have been duped out of a whopping £370,000 in a crafty scam running from June 2023 to September 2024, reports Action Fraud. Cyber crooks are hijacking hotel accounts on the platform and sending bogus payment demands to unsuspecting holidaymakers.
These sneaky messages come through in-app chats, emails, or even WhatsApp – all looking official because they’re sent from the genuine accounts of hotels the victims have already booked.
How The Con Works
The fraud isn’t due to Booking.com’s system getting hacked. Instead, scammers are phishing hotel staff to steal login details. Once inside, they impersonate the hotel and trick customers into handing over cash or card info.
Action Fraud’s Top Tips to Stay Safe
Adam Mercer, Deputy Head at Action Fraud, warns:
“With more than 500 reports made to Action Fraud, those who have booked a holiday on Booking.com should watch out for unexpected emails or messages from hotels. The account behind it could have been hijacked by criminals.”
“If anyone asks you unexpectedly for bank or credit card details, be suspicious. Always contact Booking.com or the hotel directly to check.”
