Human Remains Found in Mitcham Believed to Be Sarah Mayhew

Detectives have confirmed that the human remains discovered in Mitcham yesterday afternoon are believed to belong to Sarah Mayhew. The grim discovery occurred at 2.18pm on Tuesday, 21 May, when police were called to Rawnsley Avenue in Mitcham after contractors found the remains in a river during cleaning work.

Upon arrival, officers established a crime scene, and detectives subsequently informed Sarah’s family of this development. Sarah, aged 38 and from Croydon, is now the focus of an ongoing investigation.

Detective Inspector Martin Thorpe, who leads the case, expressed sympathy for Sarah’s family, stating, “My thoughts remain with Sarah’s family. We will continue to provide our support as our investigation progresses.” He also emphasised that officers would remain in the area to conduct crucial work at the scene.

Two individuals, known to Sarah, were arrested and later charged with her murder. Authorities are not currently seeking anyone else in connection with her death.

The investigation began following a call to police on Tuesday, 2 April, reporting possible human remains found on Rowdown Fields in Croydon. Anyone with information relevant to the case is urged to contact the police by calling 101 and quoting reference number 1656/02Apr.
