Beware the ‘Natural’ Cough Cure That Sent Me to Hospital
We all keep a bottle of this ‘natural’ remedy for colds lying around the house. You sprinkle a few drops on the kids’ pillows or a tissue, or pop some in hot water to breathe in. But what I didn’t know? It can be downright dangerous.
One Slip-Up, and I Was Rushed to Hospital
After a long week of sleepless nights, I reached into the dark for my usual cough drops. Instead, I grabbed Olbas Oil by mistake and swallowed three drops. Panic kicked in—was I poisoned? A quick call to NHS Direct sent me straight to A&E.
I spent the night hooked up to an ECG, treated as a toxicology patient. Just three tiny drops nearly did me serious harm. I wasn’t even allowed to drive myself to hospital!
Hidden Dangers Lurk in the ‘Natural’ Remedy
In 10 years of parenting, I never once thought to put this stuff out of reach. But Olbas Oil can cause eye injuries, breathing problems, and seizures if it touches eyes, noses, or mouths. Yet all it has is a tiny warning on the back.
The cap isn’t child-proof, and I often left the bottle by the kids’ bedside without a second thought. Now, I want to spread the word: if you have Olbas Oil or similar essential oil products like Karvol in your home, lock them away. Out of little hands, and out of harm’s way.

I’m fine now—just more exhausted than before. But my story is a warning. These ‘natural’ oils can be toxic, and with a tiny slip, might send you or a loved one to hospital. Please share this and keep your family safe.
