Tragic Light Aircraft Crash Near East Fortune: One Dead, One Critical

A pilot has died, and a passenger is in critical condition after a light aircraft crash near East Fortune Airfield, East Lothian. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has launched a full inquiry into the incident.

Crash Details and Emergency Response

Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 4.55pm on Thursday, 8 May 2025, following reports of a light aircraft crash near East Fortune, just outside Edinburgh.

The 40-year-old pilot was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed. The 42-year-old male passenger was critically injured and taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where he remains in a critical condition.

AAIB Launches Full Investigation

The AAIB has sent a team of inspectors to the crash site to gather evidence and determine the cause of the accident. A multidisciplinary team will conduct forensic analysis and interview witnesses to piece together what went wrong.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said,

“Enquiries remain ongoing and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch has been notified.”

Aircraft Type Unknown as Safety Questions Raised

The type of aircraft involved has not yet been officially confirmed. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
