Lily Savage Star Paul O’Grady Dies Aged 67

Paul O’Grady, beloved comedian and TV host known for his drag persona Lily Savage, has died at 67 from a cardiac arrest at his home in Kent.

Long Battle with Heart Troubles

O’Grady openly shared his struggles with heart disease throughout his life. He suffered three heart attacks between 2002 and 2014. His first strike hit at just 46, leading to emergency surgery and a decision to quit smoking, despite a long history of heavy cigarette use.

He faced further health setbacks, including kidney problems and a tough bout with Covid in 2022, which left him unable to work for two months.

From Drag Legend to TV Icon

Starting out as the trailblazing drag act Lily Savage, O’Grady went on to become one of Britain’s most cherished TV presenters and DJs. His self-titled chat show, The Paul O’Grady Show, launched in 2004 and was a hit thanks to his sharp wit and warmth.

He was also known for his love of animals and infectious humour.

Family Pay Tribute to Humour and Compassion

“His humour, humour, and compassion were truly special,” said Andre Portasio, who married O’Grady in 2017.

O’Grady’s death certificate cited coronary heart disease as the cause of death – a condition where fatty deposits block blood flow to the heart, often triggered by lifestyle factors like smoking and high cholesterol.

Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome, the condition linked to his passing, causes the heart to stop unexpectedly due to abnormal electrical impulses, cutting off oxygen to the brain.

Each year, about 500 people in the UK succumb to this silent killer, highlighting the urgent need for heart health awareness.
