Chaos at Milan Malpensa Airport as Man Wreaks Havoc with Hammer and Fire
Panic exploded at Milan Malpensa Airport’s Terminal 1 after a man armed with a hammer stormed into the departures area. At around 10:30am, he smashed check-in desk screens and set a rubbish bin ablaze, sending black smoke billowing through the terminal and travellers scrambling for safety.
Violent Attack and Dramatic Arrest
Eyewitnesses say the suspect was furious, repeatedly bashing glass screens between desks 12 and 13. He also tried to attack security but was quickly overpowered by airport staff and passengers, who pinned him to the ground before police arrived.
Firefighters rushed in as thick smoke filled the terminal, extinguishing the flames and bringing the situation under control.
Flights Delayed and Terminal Partially Closed
The Airport Association for Lombardy confirmed the man’s arrest but has yet to reveal a motive. Meanwhile, parts of Terminal 1 were temporarily shut down. SEA Milan Airports warned passengers of likely flight delays and cancellations due to evacuation and fire damage.
“Due to the closure of some areas and evacuation of premises, possible delays and cancellations for departures from the airport,” the airport said in a statement on X.
No Serious Injuries Reported
Italian news outlet La Stampa reports the attacker seemed to target only property, not people. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported, though several staff members required medical checks. The terminal remains partially closed while smoke clears and damage is assessed.
