Met Refers Deadly Colindale Incident to Police Watchdog

The Met Police have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following a man’s death in Colindale.

Stabbing and Drama Outside Colindale Tube

Police were called to Colindale Underground Station just after 1am on Sunday, 19 May. Reports came in of a fight and criminal damage outside the station. Officers arrived to find a man, believed to be in his 30s, suffering from a stab wound. The victim sadly died at the scene.

As officers approached, a man entered the station. They tried to detain him, but he fled onto the train tracks and was fatally injured. The British Transport Police (BTP) are now investigating and supporting the victim’s family.

Mandatory IOPC Referral After Police Contact

Under strict rules, any case where police contact someone who then dies must be referred to the IOPC. This ensures an independent review of the circumstances.

Superintendent Lorraine Busby-McVey, responsible for Barnet policing, said:

“This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the man’s family who very sadly lost their loved one. We are closely working with the British Transport Police, who are providing specialist support to those affected. We will continue to help in any way we can.

“We understand this will cause concern locally, and we’re ready to answer community questions. We have strong ties with local leaders and partners to promote open dialogue and address concerns.”

“Our officers are aware their actions will be carefully scrutinised, which is standard procedure. Alongside the BTP investigation, our Directorate of Professional Standards has made a mandatory referral to the IOPC. The watchdog will decide if a full investigation is necessary and who will lead it.”
