A state of emergency has been declared in Moore County as Tropical Depression Chantal makes landfall, unleashing flash flooding, dam overflows, and tornado warnings across central and southern North Carolina.

The National Weather Service issued five tornado warnings throughout the morning, affecting Lee, Chatham, and surrounding counties. Tornadoes were reported near Sanford’s Raleigh Executive Jetport and Mebane, with damage assessments underway.

Severe Flooding Prompts Emergency Response

Moore County recorded up to eight inches of rainfall, overwhelming drainage systems and causing significant flash flooding. In Southern Pines, the Longleaf Dam breached, flooding nearby apartment complexes and homes. Emergency crews rescued multiple residents stranded in vehicles as water levels surged.

In Lakeview, the Crystal Lake Dam overflowed, raising serious concerns about the stability of local infrastructure and prompting further evacuation alerts.

Widespread Disruptions Across the Region

  • Traffic: Dozens of roads across Moore County and Southern Pines are closed due to standing water, washouts, and debris.

  • Power Outages: Over 15,000 Duke Energy customers in Moore and Chatham counties are without power as utility crews battle difficult conditions to restore service.

  • Rescues: Multiple swiftwater rescue teams remain active, responding to calls from residents trapped in submerged vehicles or cut off by flooding.

Officials Urge Caution as Storm Lingers

Local authorities have issued a strong warning: “Do not travel unless absolutely necessary.” Officials stress that road conditions are hazardous, particularly after dark, and that more rain is expected as Chantal continues to move inland.

“We are deploying all available resources, including swiftwater rescue teams and shelter support,” said a Moore County emergency management spokesperson. “The safety of our residents is our highest priority.”

Shelters have been opened across the county, and updates are being posted by local governments and emergency channels.
