£172,000 Hidden in Handbags at Folkestone Border Check
Border Force officers at Folkestone made a jaw-dropping discovery on Wednesday, 20 April 2022. They stopped a vehicle set to leave the country and found a stash of £172,000 hidden in plain sight.
Cash Sewn into Bags and On Bodies
Three occupants, two women aged 27 and 47, and a 28-year-old man, all denied carrying any money. But a thorough vehicle search revealed two handbags with around £100,000 secretly sewn into their linings. Further searches of two suspects uncovered £36,000 each strapped to their persons.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
Kent Police took over the case immediately. The women were detained on suspicion of concealing criminal property. The man was arrested on suspicion of money laundering. All three have since been released on bail pending further inquiries.
