Cat dies, mother and son treated after Erith house fire sparked by lithium battery
Blaze erupts in Erith home
A house fire tore through a home on Jenningtree Road, Erith, on Sunday afternoon, October 13. It started around 4.14pm and quickly drew a massive emergency response. Four fire engines and 25 firefighters from the London Fire Brigade rushed to the scene.
Four people escaped the burning property safely, but sadly one of the family’s two cats did not survive. The mother and her son were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by paramedics.
Lithium battery sparks dangerous inferno
The fire was brought under control by 5.55pm and is being investigated as accidental. Officials believe it was caused by a catastrophic failure of lithium batteries – known to be volatile if damaged or overcharged.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson warned: “Lithium batteries store a significant amount of energy in a tiny space. If that energy is released uncontrollably, it can cause fires or explosions.”
Fire brigade warns of hidden battery dangers
Lithium battery fires produce blistering jets of flame, melt metal, and release toxic fumes. Firefighters urged everyone to take extra care when charging or storing these batteries. “Charge devices outside the home, or at least in a room with smoke detectors and easy means of escape,” they advised.
This tragic incident is a stark reminder that even everyday household gadgets can pose serious fire risks if mishandled.
