Off-Duty Sergeant Chases Down Violent Suspect in Daring Bravery Bid
An off-duty Warwickshire Police Sergeant, Adam Skelsey, has been nominated for the prestigious Police Bravery Awards 2024. His fearless pursuit of a wanted fugitive, despite multiple assaults and no backup, marks him as a true hero.
Bold Encounter on July 5
On July 5, 2023, Sergeant Skelsey spotted a notorious suspect infamous for dodging custody. Without a radio or protective gear, he acted on instinct to stop the man fleeing justice. Identifying himself as a police officer, he seized the suspect, triggering a violent reaction.
Another man with the suspect launched an attack on Sergeant Skelsey, trying to help the fugitive escape. Undeterred, Skelsey held firm, even as he suffered multiple blows and injuries.
Relentless Pursuit Against the Odds
Sergeant Skelsey’s grip never slipped. Nearby shopkeepers, alerted by the chaos, called for on-duty officers. The suspect attempted to vanish into a nearby car park – an area hidden from public view, ramping up the danger.
Despite being outnumbered and hurt, Skelsey chased him relentlessly. When the assailant struck again to free the crook, Skelsey pressed on, coordinating with other police units to prevent the suspect’s escape.
Justice Served and Praises Flow In
The suspect was soon back in custody and slapped with a 16-week sentence for his crimes and assaults.
Andy Morrissey, deputy chair of Warwickshire Police Federation, hailed Skelsey’s grit. “Our officers uphold the law and protect the public – even when off duty,” he said.
Assistant Chief Constable Ben Smith applauded the sergeant’s selflessness and professionalism, describing his actions as “extraordinary courage” in the face of danger.
Sergeant Skelsey’s Police Bravery Awards nomination stands as a powerful tribute to his unwavering commitment to keeping the community safe.
