Dawn Raids Hit Essex Drug Dealers

At 6.30am today (Wednesday 7 October), seven warrants were smashed down across Essex. Police targeted hotspots in Grays, Wickford, Brentwood, and Canvey Island. The blitz is part of a major probe into drug sales in the county.

Nine Arrested in Major Drug Bust

Nine suspects were hauled in on suspicion of drug and money laundering offences. Officers uncovered a cannabis grow operation complete with all the equipment needed to run it. This crackdown stems from Operation Venetic – a global hunt targeting criminals using encrypted phones.

How Police Cracked the Encrypted Code

  • Operation Venetic focused on EncroChat, a secure messaging service used by about 60,000 criminals worldwide, including 10,000 in the UK.
  • EncroChat’s encrypted phones helped criminals plan drug deals, move illicit goods, and launder cash.
  • Since 2016, law enforcement in Europe has been closing in on EncroChat’s network.
  • This year, French and Dutch agencies broke into the system, sharing vital intelligence with UK police via Europol.

“Drugs cause misery to our communities and we know their sale can also lead to other forms of crime, including burglaries, robberies, and violent crime,” said Detective Inspector Steve Nelson, who led the raids.

“Where drugs are being sold, often there are also vulnerable people being exploited. We will always do everything we can to protect people and keep people safe. The warrants this morning will help do that.”

This sweeping operation sends a clear message: Essex police are cracking down hard on drug crime and those exploiting their communities.
