Tragic Hit-and-Run Kills Brother and Sister in Essex
The family of Roman Casselden, 16, and his sister Darcie, 9, has been left shattered after the siblings were fatally struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run on Saturday evening in Pitsea, Essex.
Young Siblings Killed in Hit-and-Run
The heartbreaking incident happened around 6:30pm on Walthams Place, a busy residential street infamous for heavy traffic. Roman and Darcie were reportedly riding an e-scooter when they were hit by a speeding car. The vehicle fled the scene immediately, leaving the children dead at the scene despite emergency efforts.
Essex Police have since arrested a man and woman in their 20s on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop. Both remain in custody as the investigation continues.
Community in Mourning as Family Grieves
The siblings’ devastated mother, Emma Keeling, was spotted at the crash site Sunday with her partner. Their father, Alex Casselden, took to social media to express his heartbreak.
A GoFundMe set up to support the family has already raised over £3,000, with local residents donating generously to cover funeral costs and provide comfort.
Local Schools and Charity Pay Tribute
Roman and Darcie were well-known in the local community. Roman was a keen footballer involved with the Achievement Through Football (ATF) charity. Friends, teachers, and neighbours have flooded social media with memories and condolences.
“You were such a good kid, a joy to teach in PE,” said one teacher remembering Roman.
Calls for Road Safety Measures Intensify
Residents have voiced growing concerns over traffic safety in the area, highlighting frequent speeding on the 30mph road known as an accident blackspot.
Basildon Council leader Gavin Callaghan said, “I can’t imagine the pain and anguish the parents and family of these two children are going through right now. We will be supporting the local community through this difficult time.”
Essex Police continue to urge witnesses to come forward with any CCTV or dashcam footage. Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Hooper pleaded, “If you saw anything or have any information, please contact us immediately.”
The community rallies behind Roman and Darcie’s family, hoping for justice and safer roads to prevent future tragedies.
