Police Hunt Two Women After Shopper’s Trolley Slashed for Cash

Police have released CCTV images of two women they want to quiz following a brazen theft in the city centre.

Victim Targeted After Withdrawing Cash from Lloyds Bank

The 66-year-old victim had just withdrawn a large sum of money from Lloyds Bank on Lower Parliament Street before heading to Victoria Market around noon on Saturday, 24 June.

She placed the cash inside her shopping trolley when a young woman struck up a chat. Moments later, another woman bent down to tie her shoe. That’s when the victim realised her trolley had been slashed—and her money stolen.

Disturbing Pattern of Distraction Thefts

“This was extremely distressing for the victim who has lost a significant amount of money,” said PC Aaron Harthill-Harrison, leading the investigation. “It’s believed the suspects followed the victim from the bank to the market. That’s the only way they could have known where the cash was.”

“We’re aware these distraction thefts have happened before — victims are being tailed after withdrawing large sums. There’s no place for this behaviour in our city.”

Police Appeal for Help: Recognise These Women?

Officers have poured hours into reviewing CCTV and now urge the public to ID the two women pictured. If you recognise them, get in touch immediately.

PC Harthill-Harrison adds: “We also urge people to avoid withdrawing large amounts of money unless absolutely necessary — and if you do, please stay vigilant.”
