Hero Cops Break Ice with Bare Hands to Save Boys at Frozen Solihull Lake
Four fearless police officers risked everything, smashing through ice with their hands and elbows to rescue boys trapped under a frozen lake in Solihull. Their gutsy, rule-breaking rescue bid earned them nominations at this year’s Police Bravery Awards.
Tragic Rescue Ends in Heartbreak
Despite their brave efforts, all four boys tragically died despite rushed resuscitation attempts. One officer was hospitalised with mild hypothermia after the icy ordeal.
“We formed a human chain and used batons and bare hands to break the ice. When the boys were further out, I had to break the ice with my elbows,” said Sgt Fergal Sharkey, who fought back tears recalling the chilling moment. “The lake bottom suddenly dropped off. Even as a strong swimmer, I was forced to retreat due to freezing water.”
Firefighters Retrieve Boys But Fate Was Sealed
Sgt Sharkey’s brave push stopped when the lake’s icy depths got the better of him. Firefighters with specialist kit later pulled the boys out from under the ice – but sadly it was too late.
