Drugs detected at Eastleigh pub door with high-tech analyser

Police team up with The Spitfire to tackle drug misuse

Officers deployed a cutting-edge Drug Spectrum Analyser outside The Spitfire pub in Eastleigh. The device swipes patrons’ hands and scans for all known drug and prescription substances.

The operation was a joint effort between police and The Spitfire, carried out as a condition of entry amid ongoing concerns about drug use on the premises.

55 swipes, 14 traces of illegal substances

Throughout the evening, 55 hand swabs were taken. Of those, 14 showed trace amounts of illegal drugs — too minor to justify searches but enough for officers to offer advice on drug use.

3 high trace positives result in searches but no finds

Three individuals registered high trace readings of illegal drugs. They were searched under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act. All searches came back negative, with no drugs found on person.

The pioneering operation highlights police efforts to crack down on drugs at nightlife hotspots using innovative technology.
