Nottinghamshire Police Crack Down on Stalkers with New Training Blitz

Nottinghamshire Police are smashing records, arresting and charging more stalkers than ever. But many victims still suffer in silence.

Mandatory Training for Frontline Officers

To tackle the issue head-on, the force is rolling out compulsory training for all frontline officers and control room staff. The goal? Spot stalking early, gather solid evidence, and support victims like never before.

Part of a national pilot scheme, over 300 staff have already been trained, with sessions running until the end of the year.

Expert Leads the Charge: ‘Stalking Leaves Deep Scars’

Kate Reece, specialist safeguarding and stalking officer at Nottinghamshire Police, is spearheading the training. She warns:

“Stalking is a serious and prevalent crime with devastating effects. Victims often suffer physical, emotional, and psychological damage. Many have to change their routines, move home, quit jobs, and battle health issues like PTSD.”

Kate adds:

“Many victims don’t come forward because they don’t realise the behaviour is illegal. That’s why we’re investing time and money to improve officers’ ability to spot and respond to stalking.”

Spotting Stalking and Supporting Victims

  • The training covers stalking offence identification, UK laws, response protocols, and victim safeguarding.
  • Special focus is placed on domestic abuse cases, where stalking often hides other offences.

Kate explains:

“Since stalking became a criminal offence in 2012, progress has been made, but more is needed. Recognising stalking early is vital. That’s why all control room handlers and Response Officers will get training throughout 2023.”

She admits investigations can be long and complex due to changing offender behaviour, but assures victims “we do our best to work as quickly as possible.”

Victims are urged to report stalking via 101 or 999 emergencies and reminded that Nottinghamshire offers top support services.
