Firefighters are locked in a fierce battle with a waste fire blazing in West Hougham, close to Dover. Thick smoke blankets the area, forcing locals to keep windows and doors shut for their safety.

The fire erupted on the afternoon of Monday, 28 April 2025, at a waste landfill site. Emergency services swung into action, deploying six fire engines, a bulk water carrier, and even a drone to tackle the inferno.

Crews worked tirelessly through the night, running a controlled burn and keeping a close eye on the fire to stop it from spreading.

Latest Update: Firefighters Scale Back But Smoke Lingers

By 11:50pm Monday, the response was scaled down to two fire engines. But the public is still warned to keep all windows and doors closed overnight due to persistent smoke.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Firefighters remain at the scene in West Hougham overnight. Please continue to keep windows and doors closed, and share this advice with loved ones who may not have access to the internet.”

So far, there have been no injuries reported. Fire crews continue to monitor the blaze closely.

How Fire Crews Fought the Flames

At the height of the fire, crews wore full personal protective equipment (PPE), including breathing apparatus. They attacked the flames using high-pressure hose reel jets and main jets to get the fire under control.
