UK Faces Historic Heatwave with 40°C Temperatures

For the first time ever, the UK has issued a Level 4 heat health alert as temperatures are set to soar to a blistering 40°C on Monday and Tuesday next week (18-19 July). This unprecedented heatwave is more than just a health risk—it threatens transport, food and water supplies, energy, and businesses nationwide.

Kent Urges Caution Amid Record-Breaking Heat

The Kent Resilience Forum (KRF), a coalition of emergency bodies, is sounding the alarm and urging residents to prepare now. They will also support vulnerable people with regular check-ins. The very young, elderly, and those with conditions like heart and lung disease face the greatest threat, but everyone should take precautions.

Dr Anjan Ghosh, KCC Director of Public Health, warned: “We’ve never seen a level 4 alert before, so it’s critical that people protect themselves, their families, and especially vulnerable individuals who may need extra help.”

Stay Safe in the Scorching Heat: Top Tips

  • Stay indoors out of the sun between 11am-3pm when UV rays are strongest.
  • Keep curtains closed on sun-facing windows to stay cool.
  • Drink plenty of water; avoid tea, coffee, and alcohol.
  • Never leave children, babies, or pets in parked cars.
  • Check that fridges, freezers, and fans are working properly.
  • If you must travel, do so early or late in the day, carry water, and plan for medications.
  • Wear sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and walk in the shade.

Health Services Urge Calm and Care

Dame Eileen Sills, Chief Nurse at NHS Kent and Medway, urged everyone to stay hydrated and seek shade. She also asked people to check on vulnerable neighbours and loved ones. NHS advice is clear: don’t visit A&E or dial 999 unless it’s an emergency. Use NHS111 for guidance.

Dr Agostinho Sousa from UK Health Security Agency added: “Check on vulnerable friends and family to make sure they stay hydrated, cool, and safe.”

Met Office Chief Executive Professor Penny Endersby said: “This is the first Red National Severe Weather Warning for extreme heat. The UK isn’t used to this kind of weather, so please be careful.”
