Heading to Cornwall This New Year? Pack Your Own First Aid Kit!
Travel plans to Cornwall for New Year celebrations? Don’t rely on the NHS for minor ailments. Cornwall’s health services are creaking under extreme pressure, and the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust is begging visitors to bring their own first aid supplies.
The trust has warned people to only call 999 or head to A&E for life-threatening emergencies. Instead, pack painkillers, flu and cold remedies, rehydration powders, and any prescription meds you need.
“Are you going to #Cornwall this #NewYear? Bring these three self-care kings with you just in case! Pain relievers, flu and cold remedies, and rehydration powders are all available. Don’t forget to bring any prescription medications,” tweeted the trust.
They’ve even shared a handy list of must-haves for your first-aid kit:
- Bandages and dressings
- Tweezers and scissors
- Antiseptic wipes
- Medical tape
Ambulance Services Declare Critical Incidents Amid Chaos
The strain on NHS services isn’t limited to Cornwall. The South Western Ambulance Service declared a critical incident due to “extreme pressure” following the Christmas rush.
On Wednesday morning alone, there were 482 patients waiting for ambulances, with 106 more stuck waiting for hospital handovers. Ambulance crews are stretched to breaking point and struggling to respond.
Emergency Departments Buckling Under Unprecedented Demand
Adrian Harris, chief medical officer at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said emergency departments face “incredible pressure.”
“I’m asking the public to think carefully before attending A&E. Use 111 online or by phone, visit your pharmacy, or contact your GP first. We are extremely busy, so please only come if absolutely necessary,” Harris warned.
Other regions like Surrey and Sussex are also under siege, with “record numbers” flooding A&E, dialing 111 and 999, and facing staff shortages. Hospitals are struggling to discharge patients quickly, adding to the backlog.
